Acer Swift 5 review: A sturdy and dependable choice

Acer is one of the established PC brands in the market. The company has gained lot pf accolades for its ultra-thin and extremely light laptops. The company

recenlty introduced another ultra-thin laptop — Acer Swift 5 in India. featuring the powerful 8th generation Intel Core processor, the laptop come with a

stylish metal body design and weighs only 970 grams. Acer Swift 5 can be a good choice for who are looking for style and portability. The laptop comes with a starting price tag of Rs 79,990 and claims to deliver good performance and will fulfill all your business tasks with ease. We used the beautiful looking Acer Swift 5 for some time and here is our complete review.

Design

Design is one of the best aspects of the Acer Swift 5. The device is extremly light in weight and good looking. The chassis of the laptop is made using magnesium alloy and is extremely slender with just 15mm thickness. The device weighs less than a kg and is highly portable in nature. Despite being light and slim in nature the Acer Swift 5 feels quite sturdy and solid in nature. The right side of the device houses 2 USB, 1HDMI and 1 USB Type C ports, while the left consists of a 3.5mm audio jack.

Display

The Acer Swift 5 comes with a 14-inch IPS display which can bend up to 180 degrees so that you can get a perfect view. The display features ample amount of brightness levels so you don’t face any visibility issues when it is being used in broad daylight. The display also comes with Acer Color Intelligence technology which optimizes screen color, brightness and saturation resulting into much vivid and brilliant colors letting you enjoy movies and video content at their finest. Along with this, the viewing angles are also fine and is also not reflective in nature. The hinge design also complements the look and feel of the display. The hinge consists of brand logo and it keeps the screen in a tight position. The full HD resolution of the display offers crisp picture quality and contrast ratio. The only issue we had with the display is that it doesn’t offer stylus support.

Keyboard and trackpad

The keyboard and trackpad of the Acer Swift 5 is very well-sized. The chiclet keyboard comes with isolated keys which are perfectly spaced. The keys are well rounded and backlit which makes it easy for users to type when using the laptop in a dark room. The power button is placed with all the other keys of the keyboard. The folio also consists of a buttonless trackpad that works great on most occasions. But sometimes, you have to tap twice as the taps don’t register first time. Put together, the keyboard and trackpad are good overall.

Performance

The Acer Swift 5 is powered by 8th generation Intel Core i5 processor paired with 8GB of RAM. The laptop is very much suitable for daily routine tasks like media streaming, running office suites, browsing the internet or others. The device is not for gamers but it is capable of playing some routine games. The device also kept working fine even when we opened multiple tabs in the Chrome browser. Users can also run heavy editing apps on the machine. The only disappointment is that the device doesn’t come with stylus support. Considering the hefty price tag, the company should have added it to the portfolio. We also ran some benchmark tests on the Acer Swift 5 and it managed to secure 3,976 points in 3DMark and 4,670 points in PCMark.

The Acer Swift 5 runs Windows 10 operating system and comes with all its standard features. The device also comes with its own share of bloatware which include Twitter, Flipboard, Netflix, Amazon and Kindle, as well as Candy Crush Soda Saga, Music Maker Jam, Firefox and WildTangent Games. The Acer Swift 5 also includes a fingerprint reader to help quickly and securely verify the user’s identity through Windows Hello, logging them on with a touch of the finger. The audio performance of the device was also satisfactory when we played the music or video on loudspeaker. Coming to the camera, the Acer Swift 5 sports a webcam capable of recording 720p videos. The camera is just about average and produces blurry images with relatively high noise. That said, it’s fine for Skype calls. But given the price, we would have liked it to be a little better.

Battery

Now let’s talk about the battery life of the Acer Swift 5. During our testing we found the battery backup of the laptop above average The device lasted for up to 6 six hours of mixed usage which includes surfing the internet, watching videos, editing, writing, listening to music and others. This isn’t bad, but make sure you carry the charger while taking the hybrid on long trips.

Verdict

The Acer Swift 5 is a very good looking and sleek laptop with all the high-end specifications. It delivers steady performance and one won’t have too many complaints with it. The device is designed for business users and will definitely fit the bill if you are going for a meeting or travelling. Priced at Rs 79,999, the device is certainly priced on the higher side, but the laptop does manages to justify its price tag as well.
